2019 is shaping up to be an eventful year for veteran tight end Ben Watson. After being released last week by the New England Patriots before making his official debut with the team, Watson could now make a return to Foxborough.

Watson announced his retirement from professional football after the 2018 season with New Orleans Saints, but ended up changing his mind and signing with the Pats in May. However, before he could dress up for New England in an official game, the 38-year-old was suspended by the NFL after he failed a test for performance-enhancing drugs.

Watson was eligible to return in Week 5, but Patriots opted not to activate him and ended up releasing him. At the time, the team’s coach Bill Belichick said that the reason for the decision was lack of roster spots. However, it appears that Belichick miraculously found a roster spot after his tight ends core proved to be injury and mistake-prone.

Ben Watson, the first-round pick in 2004, spent the first six years of his NFL career with the New England Patriots, managing to get one Super Bowl ring out of it. He also played with Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens.

During his 15 years in the NFL, Watson played 195 games and had 530 receptions for 5,885 yards and 44 touchdowns.
