New England Patriots starting quarterback was dealt an injury blow when he experienced pain in his throwing shoulder during the first quarter of his team’s 20-10 preseason loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The injury came after Brissett was sacked by Commanders’ KJ Kerry during the sixth offensive play.

While Brissett attempted to stay in the game, he withdrew after delivering a deep throw to receiver K.J. Osborn, which was dropped by the wide receiver.

“I talked to him, but we’ll see [Monday]. You always feel a little bit more sore the next day,” Patriots coach Jerod Mayo stated after the game. “But he said he was good. He would have been able to continue.”

Mayo added that if Brissett’s injury proves to be more serious than expected, he will likely turn to rookie Drake Maye to fill in for Brissett temporarily. The third overall draft pick, Maye has been identified as the clear number two quarterback for the Patriots, Mayo confirmed.
