The New England Patriots made a huge offer, in terms of both draft compensation and contract commitment, in their failed attempt to land San Francisco 49ers’ standout wideout Brandon Aiyuk, according to a recent report by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
Aiyuk spent a large part of the offseason on the trade market after he and the 49ers failed to agree to a contract extension. At one point, the 49ers discussed deals with the Pats, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers before two sides returned to the negotiations table and hammered a four-year, $120 million deal.
In a recent appearance on NBC Sports Boston’s Sports Sunday, Breer now revealed the Patriots’ offers to both the 49ers and Aiyuk.
The Pats were reportedly open to giving up a 2025 second-round pick, a fourth-rounder in 2026, and wideout Kendrick Bourne. This was a package that San Francisco was willing to accept.
On the other hand, Pats also presented two extension offers to Aiyuk. The first offer was for three years and $90 million, while the second offer was for four years and around $130 million.
While both contract offers are considered better than the one Aiyuk signed with the 49ers, the player apparently wasn’t interested in coming to New England. The Patriots are projected to be one of the worst teams in the league, having a shaky offensive line and a journeyman quarterback backed up by a rookie.
On the other hand, staying with the 49ers gives Aiyuk not only a familiarity with the system but also a chance to make a deep playoff run and compete for a Super Bowl.
