New England Patriots are reportedly having difficulties agreeing to an extension with their left guard Joe Thuney. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the two sides discussed a new deal in recent weeks but weren’t able to get on the same page so far.

Thuney isn’t in any rush to sign a deal that he doesn’t favor, considering he will play under a franchise tag that guarantees him $14.78 million in 2020. Pats, on the other side, are struggling with cap space and would like to lock the 27-year-old to a long-term extension that would also significantly lower his cap hit according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.

While Howe notes that Patriots didn’t have any significant trade talks surrounding Joe Thuney, this might change as the draft approaches. Reiss reports that New England might entertain the idea of shipping Thuney away if the contract discussions don’t progress in the upcoming days. Their asking price would be a second-round pick or a high third-rounder.

Thuney was New England Patriots’ third-round pick in 2016 NFL Draft. He was made the starter in his rookie year and hasn’t missed a single game since then, helping Pats’ to win two Super Bowls.
