The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes won’t retire from the NFL anytime soon. But when he does, he would like to remain part of the league as a team owner.
Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Mahomes said that he wants to own an NFL team once he’s done playing.
“I think Tom [Brady] is trying to do it right now, but that’s definitely where you want to get to,” said Mahomes when asked about his interest in owning an NFL team. “I love this sport and want to give back in any way possible. When I’m done playing, obviously I’ll be a Chiefs fan, but at the same time I want to have that competitive edge I’ve always had my entire life.”
Mahomes is already preparing himself for a potential future as an NFL team owner. The reigning NFL MVP has minority stakes in MLB’s Kansas City Royals as well as two soccer teams based in Kansas City: MLS’ Sporting KC and NWSL’s Current. He recently also invested in Formula One’s Alpine F1 Team.
“I can’t do it in the NFL while I’m playing, so I’m always looking around at other sports,” he added. “It’s hard to get in all sports, NBA and all that different type of stuff, but I’m always keeping my ears open. If they give me the opportunity, I’m going to jump at it.”
Only three former NFL players ended up owning an NFL team: George Halas Sr, Jerry Richardson, and Tom Brady.
Halas was the founder and first owner of the Chicago Bears while also playing a wide receiver for the team and serving as its head coach. Richardson, who played two seasons in the NFL with the Baltimore Colts, became the owner of the Carolina Panthers in 1993. And the most recent example is legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who became a minority owner with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this year.
