Olympique Lyon’s Pape Cheikh, one of the club’s star-signings prior to the 2018-19 season, will go out on loan for the second straight season as the club announced that he will play for Ligue 1 rivals Dijon FCO in the 2020-21 campaign.

Cheikh, who joined Celta Vigo on loan in 2019-20 and played sparingly, featuring in only 19 total matches and making just 9 starts, will look to get his once-promising career back on track with a new club in the upcoming season.

The former Spanish youth international was sold to Lyon from Celta Vigo just two summers ago for $12 million, but never really established himself in the squad in his first season.

After disappointing at his club of origin last season, Cheikh will have the opportunity to try his luck in Ligue 1 with a new club that could really use an injection of quality in the midfield.

Dijon struggled last season, coming in 16th place in France’s top division. It could be an ideal place for Cheikh to get his career back on track, as he looks set to get a significant amount of playing time in the upcoming season.

If Cheikh’s Dijon finishes the 2020-21 season without being relegated, they reportedly have an obligatory $6.5 million purchase option for the 23-year-old, which could make him a key part of their squad for years to come.
