Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers, fourth on the NFL’s all-time sack list, announced on Friday that he will be retiring from the NFL after 17 seasons.

Peppers, 39, is the last player drafted in the class of 2002 to retire. He was drafted as a No.2 pick back then and went on to complete 159.5 career sacks and 10 interceptions, a record only he holds. He’s, however, fourth in career sacks- -just behind Kevin Greene (160), Bruce Smith (198) and Reggie White (200).

“Seventeen years is a long time to be playing this game. It is two careers for a lot of people. I’m thankful that I have been able to play so long and still be healthy. I’m not all banged up and beaten down. I still feel good,” Peppers said in a statement.

“But as much as I would love to play forever, I know that I can’t. It’s gotta end at some point. That point is now. Today, I’m retiring.”

Having been born, raised and spent most of his career in North Carolina, the 39-year-old took the chance to thank his club, fans and everyone who supported him.

“Thank you. For the victories and the good times. For the lessons, and for the times we desired more. For the sacrifices, the belief, the confidence, the unwavering support. I am thankful. Because without you, this wasn’t possible.”

With his numbers, a three time All-Pro, nine-time Pro-Bowler and made it to the 2000s team of the decade, Peppers is projected to get into the Hall of Famer as soon as he is eligible.
