Even after another disappointing playoff loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Diego Padres believe that manager Mike Shildt is the skipper who can get them over the hump.
The Padres announced on Wednesday that they have signed Shildt to a new two-year extension. Being previously under contract through next season, Shildt is now tied to the organization until the end of the 2027 campaign.
The Padres hired Shildt during the offseason after they missed out on playoffs in 2023 and parted ways with manager Bob Melvin. It proved to be a great move as Shildt led the franchise to second-most wins in its history.
The Padres finished the regular season with a 93-69 record that included an impressive 43-20 run after the All-Star break. They easily swept the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card game and had two chances of winning the NL Divisional Series against the Dodgers but failed to take advantage of either.
However, the Padres’ president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller believes the team led by Shildt is on good track to finally win the World Series for San Diego.
“As Mike demonstrated this year, he has an unwavering commitment to winning and a unique set of skills that got our group to perform at a high level,” said Padres President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller in a statement. “He possesses a true love for this team and the game of baseball, and I am thrilled to continue to work together with Mike to bring a championship to the City of San Diego.”
