San Diego Padres’ star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is getting close to his return from an injury that sidelined him since June. According to Tatis, he expects to be back in action in September.

Tatis Jr. had a great start to the 2024 MLB season, batting .279 with 14 homers and 36 RBIs in 80 games. He also earned his second career All-Star nod. However, a femur bone stress reaction in his right leg kept him out of action since June 21 game against Milwaukee Brewers.

While Padres are still tight-lipped about his return, Tatis as already been taking batting practices as he ramps up his conditioning.

“It felt really good just being outside with the boys, ramping up. Every day a step closer,” Tatis told reports on Friday.

According to Tatis, he still doesn’t know the “specific date” of his return but is certain that he’ll play baseball next month.

“I feel that’s more a conversation between the training staff, the manager and myself and A.J. [Preller, the general manager]. But I’m definitely playing baseball the next month. That’s what it looks like,” he added.

Having Tatis would boost San Diego’s chances of getting a place in the playoffs. Thanks to an impressive run after the All-Star break, during which they went 22-8, the Padres are currently sitting at 73-57 and have the second NL wild card in their possession.
