As of Thursday, the Green Bay Packers have a new wide receiver on their roster. However, it isn’t a big name most fans have hoped for. Instead, the Packers added veteran Sammy Watkins, who reportedly arrives on a one-year, $4 million deal.

Watkins spent the 2021 season with the Baltimore Ravens but failed to make a significant impact. He struggled to stay on the field due to various injuries and had only 27 receptions for 394 yards and one touchdown to show at the end of the campaign.

Green Bay probably hopes that Watkins can benefit from a change of scenery and playing with a superstar quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. But in order for that to happen, the 28-year-old player needs to stay healthy. He never completed a full season since his rookie year in 2014 and has missed 28 games in the past four seasons.

Watkins, who has a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs, delivered his best performance in 2015 when he made 60 catches for 1,047 receiving yards and nine TDs. His NFL totals include348 receptions for 5,059 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Regardless of Watkins’ injury issues, the Packers now need all the help they can get. The offseason was not kind to their wide receiving corps, considering Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Equanimeous St. Brown all left Green Bay. This left Allen Lazard and veteran Randal Cobb as their two main options for the position.
