Pro Bowl left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. rejected the latest contract offer from the Kansas City Chiefs and will play the 2022 NFL season on a franchise tag. Reportedly, the Chiefs were willing to give Brown a six-year extension, but the two sides couldn’t agree on the finances.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Chiefs offered Brown a $139 million deal with an average annual salary of $23.16 million and a $30.25 million signing bonus. It is unclear how much of the $139 million would be guaranteed.
Schefter adds that despite negotiations falling apart, the two sides remain optimistic that they can come back to the table next offseason and get the deal done.
Playing on a franchise tag in 2022, Brown is set to earn $16.6 million. This represents a substantial rise compared to the $872,930 he earned in 2021 in the final year of his rookie deal.
Orlando Brown spent the first three years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens, where he went from being a Pro Bowl right tackle in his sophomore year to become a Pro Bowl left tackle in the year after. However, with the team set on Ronnie Stanley as their LT of the future and Brown not wanting to play on the right anymore, the Ravens traded the Oklahoma product to the Chiefs for picks.
Brown didn’t skip a beat after coming to Kansas City and went on to start every game as the left tackle for the Chiefs. He finished the year with a third Pro Bowl on his resume.
