Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under another wave of criticism following his side’s disappointing 1-1 draw at home with Everton on Saturday. Much of the fans’ outrage was directed at the Norwegian national’s decision to place Ronaldo on the substitute bench as well as other changes to the team sheet.
Despite scoring five goals in his first six United appearances, Ronaldo was benched alongside stars such as Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho. Ronaldo was brought into the game in the 57th minute.
Following his team’s disappointing result, Solskjaer defended his decision to remove Ronaldo from the starting 11 ahead of the clash. He explained: “You make decisions throughout a long, long season and you’ve got to manage the players’ workload and the decision was, for me, the correct one today.”
Solksjaer also made reference to his team’s busy schedule, using it as motivation to provide certain players with an occasional rest. He furthermore praised Antony Martial for his goal; the first of the 2021-22 season.
After a disappointing run of results, Manchester United face a tough couple of weeks ahead, facing tough opponents in the form of Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
