The New York Jets fired their general manager, Joe Douglas, on Tuesday. The move now ensures that the Jets will enter the 2025 NFL season with a completely new setup, considering they also fired head coach Robert Saleh earlier in the campaign.
The franchise announced Douglas’ firing by sharing a statement from owner Woody Johnson.
“Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the General Manager of the New York Jets. I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward,” Johnson said in a statement.
Johnson added that senior football adviser Phil Savage will take over GM duties on an interim basis while the team embarks on a search for a permanent hire.
The decision to fire Douglas came two days after the Jets suffered another crushing defeat to the Indianapolis Colts. The loss dropped the Jets to a 3-8 record and all but assured they will extend their playoff drought to 14 seasons.
Joe Douglas was hired by the Jets in 2019 after serving as Vice president of player personnel with the Philadelphia Eagles. Douglas was supposed to rebuild the struggling franchise and set it up for long-term success but failed to come close to achieving that goal.
During Douglas’ five and a half seasons on the job, the Jets never had a winning season and compiled a 30-64 record. He was criticized for failing to identify a franchise quarterback and taking too long to address the offensive line worries. However, he also had some stellar moves, such as drafting star wide receiver Garrett Wilson and All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner.
