Daniel Jones is no longer the starting quarterback of the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll informed Jones on Monday that he is getting benched, with second-year signal-caller Tommy DeVito getting the starting nod for the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jones is being demoted to third-string quarterback, while Drew Lock will keep his job as a backup.
“We are making a quarterback switch from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito, “said Daboll. “After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, that’s the reason we are going with Tommy. Drew Lock will be the backup. This was a necessary move for us, and I’m looking forward to working with Tommy, and he’ll be ready to go against Tampa Bay.”
Selected sixth overall in 2019, Daniel Jones struggled early in his career before having a breakthrough season in 2022 that saw him lead the Giants to the Divisional Round. This made the NY team believe they have a franchise quarterback on their hand and prompted them to sign him to a massive four-year, $160 million contract extension.
However, the move didn’t work out for the Giants, who are sitting at a 2-8 record. Jones played only six games in 2023 due to a torn ACL and then mightily struggled so far this season. He completed 63.3% of his passes while throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven picks in 10 games.
DeVito, on the other hand, provided a spark for the Giants while Jones was injured last season, and the team now hopes he will manage to do the same. The 2023 undrafted free agent won his first three starts before losing the following three games. He threw for 1,101 yards, eight TDs, and three picks during that stretch.
