Premier League side Nottingham Forest is open to letting U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner leave the club before the summer transfer window ends. But reportedly, the club will only sanction a permanent transfer.
According to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle, Forest has recently rejected multiple offers from clubs that wanted to take Turner on loan. The 30-year-old American, on the other hand, is open to any kind of move with hopes of getting more playing time and keeping his role as No. 1 for the United States men’s national team.
Forest is likely pushing for a permanent transfer in order to recoup some of the money they invested in Turner when they acquired him from Arsenal in a $9 million transfer last summer. Turner still has three years left on his contract.
Turner took over as the starting goalkeeper for Nottingham when he joined the club but ended up being benched halfway through the 2023-24 season due to poor performances. He finished the campaign with 21 appearances in all competitions, conceding 31 goals and keeping only three clean sheets.
So far in 2024-25, Turner was not included in the squad for Forest’s first two Premier League games and spent the EFL Cup clash against Newcastle United on the bench.
The path for Turner to gain some meaningful playing time with Forest seems bleak if he ends up staying at the club. Belgian goalie Matz Sels seems to be head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s favorite for No. 1, while the newly acquired Carlos Miguel is preferred for the backup role.
