Roger Goodell will remain the commissioner of the NFL after signing a five-year extension with the league. According to ESPN, the deal is worth $200 million and runs through the 2023 season. Goodell will receive the majority of the money through bonuses, which will require approval and validation from the ownership. His previous deal would expire after 2018 season.

ESPN also obtained the letter which NFL Compensation Committee sent to NFL owners about finalizing Goodell’s contract.

Our Committee unanimously supports the contract and believes that it is fully consistent with ‘market’ compensation and the financial and other parameters outlined to the owners at our May 2017 meeting, as well as in the best interests of ownership,” – said the letter. “… We are pleased to report that there is a nearly unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now.

Arthur Blank, the owner of Atlanta Falcons and the chairman of the NFL Compensation Committee, confirmed that the Goodell signed the deal on Wednesday.

I’m feeling relieved now,” – said Blank in an interview for The MMQB. “I’m happy that it’s over. I was just telling Roger that in the history of the NFL, I’m not sure a big decision has been so transparent as this one. We got a lot of input from a lot of owners, a lot of guidance from them, and we feel very good about what developed out of that.

Roger Goodell was appointed as the Commissioner of NFL in 2006, succeeding the retiring Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. During his time at the position, Goodell notably shut down NFL Europe in 2007. He is also known for his changes in the league’s personal conduct policies and also for his work in the 2011 NFL lockout.
