Neymar received a red card during Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Wednesday night in what was his return to club football after representing Brazil at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

While he picked up his first yellow card during the 61st minute for a challenge on Strasbourg midfielder Adrien Thomasson in which his hand made contact with Thomasson’s face, Neymar was cautioned yet again one minute later, this time for diving. While the 30-year-old raced up to referee Clement Turpin to argue against the call, the referee stood by his decision to hand the Brazilian a second yellow card and thereby send him to the locker room early.

This is Neymar’s fifth red card since joining PSG for a world record transfer fee of €222 million in 2017. As a result, he will miss out on PSG’s next Ligue 1 match against second-placed Lens on Sunday.

Prior to his send off, Neymar provided the assist to center back Marquinhos to open the scoring during the first half of the action. While Marquinhos allowed Strasbourg back into the game with an own goal, Kylian Mbappe scored from the spot in the dying embers of the game to hand PSG the three points.
