A return to MLS could be on the books for Newcastle United’s attacking midfielder Miguel Almirón. According to multiple reporters, Charlotte FC is interested in signing Almirón in January.

Charlotte FC has been tracking Almirón for a while now and would be willing to pay $10 million to land the Paraguay international. Newcastle, on the other hand, has a $20 million price tag but would likely be willing to accept less, considering Almirón has been deemed surplus to requirements at St. James’ Park.

Despite Almirón previously playing for Atlanta United, Charlotte FC currently holds his discovery rights, meaning they are the only MLS team that can currently negotiate with him directly.

It is unclear whether Almirón has any other suitors in MLS at the moment, but Charlotte FC is facing competition for his services elsewhere. Saudia Arabia’s Al-Shabab and Brazil’s Botagofo are also interested in the player, with Botafogo believed to be in advanced talks with Newcastle.

Miguel Almirón spent his early career with Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño and Argentina’s Lanús before securing an $8 million transfer to Atlanta United ahead of the 2017 MLS season. He went on to establish himself as one of the best players in the league immediately, earning back-to-back MLS Best XI honors and helping the club win the MLS Cup in 2018.

Almirón’s stellar performances in MLS attracted interest from major European clubs, and he ended up signing for Newcastle United in January 2019 in an MLS-record $27 million transfer.

While Almirón played a significant role for Newcastle in recent seasons, his playing time diminished in 2024-25. He only played seven games, including one as a starter, in the Premier League and spent a combined 136 minutes on the pitch without contributing a single goal or an assist.

Gunner's favorite movies are Pulp Fiction, Iron Man (just the first one), and every James Bond film ever made. He's learning TV and cinema and hoping to always enjoy movies as he does now.
