Newcastle United decided to recall goalkeeper Martin Dubravka from his season-long loan at Manchester United, both clubs confirmed on Sunday. According to multiple reports, the Red Devils are yet to decide whether or not to sign another replacement backup goalkeeper during the January transfer window.

“Martin Dubravka has been recalled from his season-long loan to Manchester United by his parent club Newcastle United,” an official statement by Manchester United read. “The Slovakian goalkeeper has made two appearances for the Reds since arriving from Tyneside in the summer, both in the Carabao Cup. We would like to thank Martin for his contribution during his time with our club, and wish him all the best for the future.”

Man Utd forked out £2 million to loan Dubravka from Newcastle before the start of the current season. The deal included an option to sign him permanently for a fee of £6 million depending on whether or not the goalkeeper made a specific number of appearances for the club.

According to reports, it was Newcastle that decided to end the Slovakian player’s loan deal at Old Trafford early.
