Chase Headley is heading back where everything started. After acquiring Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins, the New York Yankees needed to save some money and flipped third baseman Chase Headley and his $13 million contract to the team that initially drafted him. The Yankees traded Headley, reliever Bryan Mitchell and $500,000 in cash to San Diego Padres in exchange for in exchange for outfielder Jabari Blash.

The Yankees made the deal in order to get salary relief after trading for Stanton and his $218 million left on the contract. The team is also making the moves to get their payroll under the $197 million luxury-tax threshold. After trading Headley and previously sending second baseman Starlin Castro to the Marlins, the Yankees are now expected to make additions to their roster in order to fill the two open infield positions.

Chase Headley was drafted by the Padres in the second round of the 2005 Major League Baseball draft. He was called up to the majors on two occasions, in 2007 and 2008, before becoming the team’s starting left fielder in 2009. In 2012, he had the best season in his career, having 31 home runs, being the NL RBI leader and winning Silver Slugger and Golden Glove awards. Headley was traded to the Yankees in 2014, but failed to replicate his 2012 performance. He is currently in the last year of his four year contract. It looks like Headley might see it in the jersey of some other team according to Padres’ GM A.J. Preller.

I talked to Chase this morning and explained to him that we’re going to look at the situation and figure out is there space for everybody? Is their opportunity for everybody?” – said Preller. “I was very honest, telling him that we’re going to talk to other clubs, as well.
