It turns out that Spanish midfielder Carles Gil didn’t have a favorable opinion on MLS before he signed with New England Revolution in 2019. Gil recently admitted that he had his doubts about the league’s quality but ended up changing his mind once he started playing soccer in the U.S.

In a recent interview with Stats Perform News, Gil said that MLS proved to be a “positive” surprise for him.

“Regarding the league, it has been a positive surprise,” said Gil. “I think we have a different view in Europe about what this league is. Probably we think it has a much lower level than it actually has, by looking at players who come here to end their career. This is changing a lot and we will be aware of it as the years go by.”

Carles Gil joined Revolution in 2019 from La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna and immediately managed to make his impact in the league. The 27-year-old Spaniard scored 10 goals and contributed with 14 assists in his first year, receiving Best XI honors and MLS Newcomer of the Year award.

These spectacular performances did not only help New England Revolution make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2015 but also allowed Gil to prove he can still play on a high level after some down years.

“Personally, my experience of the MLS has been great,” he added. “One of the reasons I came here was due to the confidence they showed in me. I wanted to get back to the level I couldn’t show in previous years.”
