Shortly after the NBA revealed its plan to resume the 2019/20 season, its minor league basketball organization, NBA G League, decided to go the opposite way.

The G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim announced on Thursday that the league decided to cancel the remainder of the 2019/20 season. The league won’t crown a champion but will still hand out the Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year, and Rookie of the Year awards.

“While canceling the remainder of our season weighs heavily on us, we recognize that it is the most appropriate action to take for our league,” said Abdur-Rahim in a statement.

The G League followed the NBA in suspending its season, putting a halt to all activities on March 12th. But, unlike the NBA, which will see significant financial benefits from resuming the season, the G League doesn’t have a real incentive to finish the 2019/20 season.

However, despite the decision to cancel the season, G League reportedly paid the player’s salaries in full while extending their health benefits.

It remains unclear whether the G League players who are under two-way contracts with NBA teams will be able to join them for NBA season resume scheduled for July.
