Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher suffered a broken jaw in the third period of his team’s Game 5 win against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Gallagher received a brutal cross-check to the face that was delivered by Flyers defenseman Matt Niskanen. He will have to have surgery, which means that he will have to leave the Toronto playoff bubble and won’t be able to finish the Philadelphia series.

However, if Montreal does win the series, Gallagher could come back to the team. The 28-year-old forward has been very good in the playoffs for Montreal. He has four points in the nine games played since the NHL season restarted and scored a goal in Thursday’s 5-3 victory.

The Flyers still lead the series 3-2, but will have to try to close out the series without Niskanen, who has been suspended for the cross-check and won’t be available for Game 6.

Niskanen is very important to the Flyers defense. He and Ivan Provorov have been the team’s top defense pair all season.

Niskanen’s replacement for Game 6 will most likely be Shayne Gostisbehere, who might actually be able to give the Flyers a much-needed jump-start on the offensive half of the ice.
