Inter Miami is adding some experience to their young squad ahead of the upcoming MLS is Back Tournament. The team announced on Thursday that they have signed journeyman winger/back Brek Shea.

Shea most recently played with Atlanta United, making 19 appearances for the team in 2019 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Reportedly, he is now fully healthy and ready to play.

Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said that the team is pleased with acquiring Shea and hopes his previous experience in the league will be beneficial in the upcoming games.

“Brek is a player who we know very well from previous MLS experiences that brings a lot of attacking threat and defensive solidity,” said McDonough. “He has been training and recovering from an injury, showing he is in his regular form and able to contribute to the first team.”

Shea has been an unofficial member of Inter Miami since early 2020, training with the team’s USL affiliate during his recovery process.

“It feels good. I’m excited to be here,” said Shea. “Nothing can take away the first year. This is the first year of the Club and I’m excited to be part of that. I’ll always be a part of that.”

Brek Shea started his professional career in 2008 with Dallas FC and later had stints with Orlando City, Vancouver Whitecaps, and Atlanta United. Shea, who was an All-Star in 2011, has 224 career games in MLS and has scored 29 goals.

Shea also played two seasons in the Premier League with Stoke City but didn’t manage to make an impact during his time there.
