According to multiple media reports, Major League Baseball is considering a rather out-of-the-box plan for at least part of the 2020 season in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has caused the postponement of the opening of the season.

Reports have stated that the MLB and commissioner Rob Manfred are considering the idea of at least beginning the 2020 season in Arizona, playing games there until officials decide that it is safe for teams to return home, or for the entirety of the year.

Major League Baseball released a statement on Tuesday acknowledging the fact that they have been considering various contingency plans, but did not offer many more specifics.

Arizona is a potential host for the season due to the relatively low number of coronavirus cases there, as well as the large number of baseball stadiums which are available for use in the area.

The Diamondbacks and Chase Field are the crown jewel of Arizona baseball, but the state and Phoenix metro area also play home to ten Spring Training parks which could theoretically host regular season games.

It does not seem, however, that fans would be allowed at games due to the need to avoid large crowds.

Keep an eye on Major League Baseball’s plans going forward, as Arizona and other options could be distinct possibilities for a season unlike anyone could have ever imagined.
