After a career-best 2017-18 season, defenseman Matt Dumba secured himself a new contract with the Minnesota Wild. Dumba signed a five-year, $30 million extension which will see him staying with Wild trough 2022–23 season. The 23-year-old was a restricted free agent this summer.

This new deal represents a significant raise for Dumba, who earned around $2.5 million a year on his previous contract.

Five more years, I think of five solid years in Minnesota,” – said Dumba after inking the deal. “It has become home for me. It was a no-brainer. … I’m very appreciative and happy to know I’m going to be in the State of Hockey for five more years.

I look back at my personal growth over the season and I want that to just be the start,” – he added. “I think I started the year a little slow, to be honest, and if I can play at the pace I was down the stretch the entire season, I think, I hope, I’m just scratching the surface.

Matt Dumba appeared in all 82 games in the previous NHL season and had career-best 14 goals and 36 assists. He also contributed a goal and an assist in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

We expect Matt to play the same role, or even add to the role that he’s starting to come into,” – said Wild’s general manager Paul Fenton. “It’s hard to find these right defenseman that can add a game-breaking ability.

Minnesota Wild took Matt Dumba seventh overall in 2012 NHL Entry Draft. After several stints with Wild’s AHL affiliates, Dumba established himself as the part of the rotation in the 2015-16 season. He earned more playing time each year while improving his production. In 310 career NHL games, he managed 44 goals and 84 assists.

On the international level, Matt Dumba was part of Canada national team that won gold at IIHF World Championship in 2016.
