The New York Mets’ shortstop Ronny Mauricio is dealing with a torn ACL, according to an announcement made by the team. Mauricio suffered the injury while playing in the Dominican Winter League.

The Mets said that Mauricio will undergo surgery and that the timetable for his return will be shared at a later date.

When asked about Mauricio and whether he’ll play in 2024, the Mets’ new manager Carlos Mendoza didn’t want to give any predictions.

“That’s hard to tell,” Mendoza told reporters on Wednesday. “He’s going through a lot of tests and we’ll see what the doctors — the reports that we get from the doctors and the medical department, and we’ll see where we at.”

Ronny Mauricio signed with the Mets in 2017 as an international free agent. After more than five years in the minors, Mauricio made his MLB debut this past season. While he had his ups and downs, finishing with a .248 batting average, two home runs and nine RBIs in 26 games, many believed the 22-year-old showed enough to be part of the Mets’ plans in 2024.

Playing the Winter League became a tradition for Mauricio. This was his fourth consecutive campaign, and he even won the MVP award in 2022.
