The New York Mets announced that their rookie pitcher Christian Scott will undergo Tommy John surgery on his elbow. The procedure will sideline Scott for the remainder of the 2024 campaign and the entire 2025 season.
Scott last pitched back in July before being shut down due to a UCL sprain in his right elbow. There were hopes that he might avoid the surgery, but even after extended downtime, he still hasn’t been able to feel comfortable at the mound.
“Just couldn’t get over the hump with some of the off-speed pitches. Once we started to reach that over 82, 83 mph, it’s kind of the same feeling as before,” Scott said via ESPN. “Talked to a lot of the medical staff, a lot of these guys here. We decided this is the best decision moving forward.”
Christian Scott was the Mets’ fifth-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. After a promising showing in the minors, the New York team called him up to MLB in early May, and he received his debut in a 1-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.
Scott started nine games for the Mets this season, going 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA and 39 strikeouts.
“It’s not good that he’s going to be down for a long time, but he can use this experience this year as a development for him,” Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza said. “He took the baseball from us and gave us a chance. He continues to learn, and he knows what it takes to be a big league player — what it takes to be a big league pitcher.”
