The New York Mets claimed a huge 12-6 Game 5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night that kept them alive in the National League Championship series.
The Dodgers entered the game with a 3-1 lead and had the opportunity to close out the series and return to the World Series for the first time since 2020. However, as was the case the whole season, the Mets refused to go down easily.
The New York team bounced back from 2-10 routing in Game 4 in a spectacular fashion. Pete Alonso kicked things off with a three-run 432-feet homer in the bottom of the first inning.
The Mets continued to exploit an off night from Dodgers’ pitcher Jack Flaherty, who had a 7.20 ERA and failed to record a strikeout. Starling Marte finished the game with four hits, three RBIs, and three doubles, while Francisco Alvarez recorded three hits and had an RBI single in the third inning that saw the Mets score five runs.
“We showed up today. We needed that,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game. “Obviously, Pete setting the tone in the first inning was important. We just continued to add on.”
The NY Mets will now have to show up two more times if they want to make their first World Series appearance since 2015. Game 6 is set to take place on Sunday.
