Marseille has completed the signing of central midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg from Tottenham Hotspur. Reported to be worth €20 million ($21.8 million), the deal came in the form of a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Højbjerg’s departure from Spurs may come as a shock given the club’s reliance on him over the past season. He appeared in 36 of 38 Premier League matches, with 26 appearances off the bench as a substitute. The Danish 28-year-old played for Spurs since 2020 when he arrived from fellow Premier League club Southampton. He made 184 appearances for Spurs, scoring 10 goals.

Beyond his club career, Højbjerg has been a regular player in the Danish national team. Scoring 10 goals in 84 international appearances, Højbjerg was a regular starter in Denmarks’ Euro 2024 squad, playing in his nation’s round of 16 loss to Germany.

Højbjerg’s arrival at Marseille is the latest move in what has been a major overhaul of the French club. Having finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season, the team is working to return to the UEFA Champions League, hiring new manager Roberto de Zerbi who last managed Brighton and signing winger Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.
