Toronto Maple Leafs didn’t make big splashes around the NHL trade deadline, but that doesn’t mean the team was inactive. Maple Leafs opted to do work inside the organization and have locked up their defenseman Jake Muzzin to a four-year extension.

According to the team’s official statement, Muzzin’s deal is worth $5.625 million per year and $22.5 million overall. TSN reports that the 30-year-old will also receive a hefty signing bonus, believed to be around $16.8 million.

Muzzin, who was scheduled to become a free agent after the end of the season, played 52 games with Toronto this season and contributed with five goals and 17 assists for a total of 22 points.

Jake Muzzin made a name for himself as a member of Los Angeles Kings, where he played for eight seasons and helped the team to a Stanley Cup win in 2014. However, as the Kings decided to focus on rebuilding, Muzzin became a trade target for other teams and ended up landing with Maple Leafs midway through the 2018/19 NHL season.

Muzzin played a total of 526 NHL career games, scoring 56 goals and dishing 173 assists in the process. He was also a part of Canada’s national team on several competitions, including the 2015 IIHF World Championship and 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where he helped the nation to win gold medals.
