Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to win the 2023 Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday night. This is the Red Devils’ first trophy since 2017 when they won the Europa League under then-manager Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils looked to be in the driving seat from early on in the game, opening the scoring in the 33rd minute when Casemiro got on the end of a Luke Shaw free kick with a header. Just six minutes later, the in-form Marcus Rashford burst forward on the counter-attack, taking a shot that deflected off Newcastle defender Sven Botman into the net.
In addition to being Man Utd’s first title in six years, this Carabao Cup final was also a historic occasion for the Magpies, who made their first League Cup final appearance since 1976.
“It has been an amazing period, the first trophy of the season, but we want more — it is not enough for this club, we want more and we need more because our standards demand more,” captain Bruno Fernandes stated following the win.
New manager Erik ten Hag was the recipient of much praise, leading Man Utd to a trophy within his first season in charge while putting them in the race for their first Premier League win in a decade. Currently, Man Utd is the only Premier League team that is still in all competitions.
