Former Manchester United player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was named the club’s caretaker manager until the end of the season on Tuesday, one day after Jose Mourinho was sacked. Ole Gunnar played 11 seasons with United and scored the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final.

“Manchester United is my heart and it’s brilliant to be coming back in this role,” the Norwegian said. “This is an opportunity I had to take. I’m really looking forward to working with the very talented squad we have, the staff and everyone at the club.”

Solskjaer, who takes over the job with United at the sixth position, will work alongside Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna. The Norwegian’s first job will get a win for the club at Cardiff on Saturday, the club where he previously coached albeit with a poor run.

Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman welcomed the former player to Old Trafford.

“Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching rules,” Woodward said. “His history at Manchester United means he lives and breathes the culture here and everyone at the club is delighted to have him and Mike Phelan back. We are confident they will unite the players and the fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
