Manchester United transfer target Frenkie de Jong has been included in the squad that FC Barcelona will take on their pre-season tour to the United States, thereby causing doubt surrounding his proposed transfer to the Premier League side this summer.

With FC Barcelona agreeing to the Red Devils’ offer of €65 million plus add-ons for the player, many expected de Jong to remain in Spain as the rest of the squad jetted off to Miami. There, the Blaugranes are expected to face MLS clubs Inter Miami and the New York Red Bulls as well as La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Serie A side Juventus.

Following a prolonged negotiation process, Manchester United officials remain confident that they will secure de Jong’s signature in the coming days. Still, the player seems unsure about making the move to Old Trafford, with his representatives approaching the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea to join the race to sign him.

De Jong’s reluctance to join Manchester United is believed to be caused by his desire to play Champions League football next season – a competition that the Red Devils failed to qualify for. Still, the Blaugranes have little choice other than to offload him as they look to gather the finances needed to register new arrivals Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen, while Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski are also due to arrive at the club in the coming days.
