Manchester United completed the signing of Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season, both teams confirmed. The transfer was completed hours before the transfer deadline day at 2300 GMT on Tuesday.

Sabitzer became an urgent transfer target for Man Utd following the injury of Christian Eriksen, who is expected to be sidelined for at least three months after incurring an ankle injury resulting from a dangerous tackle during the team’s 3-1 win over Reading in the 4th round of the FA Cup on Saturday night. With both Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay also sidelined, the Red Devils are running short of options at center midfield.

“Marcel is a player that we have watched for a long time,” Man Utd director of football John Murtough stated. “The opportunity arose quickly, and we knew that he was someone with the ability and character to make an impact. He adds further quality to our squad and experience to the dressing room, and all of us are pleased to be welcoming him to Manchester United.”

After struggling to secure his place in the Bayern Munich starting lineup, Sabitzer will look to gain more regular playing time in the Premier League. Sabitzer is Man Utd’s second signing of the January transfer window following the arrival of striker Wout Weghorst, who also joined on loan until the end of the season.
