Manchester United failed to secure goalkeeper David de Gea to a long-term contract before the start of the season, which led to speculation that the Spaniard might leave the club in the summer of 2020. But according to Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel, that won’t be the case.

Schmeichel, who was a goalkeeper for United between 1991 and 1999, recently had a chat with The Mirror in which he suggested that De Gea already has an agreement with the club to make a long-term commitment.

“David was a great signal that we start off with arguably our best performer over the last five years,” – Schmeichel told the magazine. “We have tied him down, he is staying, and now we move on and build on that.”

If true, this is excellent news for Manchester United, considering that David De Gea was the club’s best player in the past several years. De Gea joined United in 2011 and has helped the team to win their last Premier League title as well as UEFA Europa League trophy. He played 363 games with the club in nine years and established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the process.

De Gea’s reluctance to sign a new deal with Manchester led to him being linked with several other high-profile European clubs in the past, including Real Madrid. He ended up remaining in Premier League, and it seems like that will be the case for years to come.
