Manchester United defeated Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of their Europe League round of 16 tie, thereby shaking off their embarrassing 7-0 defeat to Liverpool on the weekend.

While Marcus Rashford handed the Red Devils the perfect start to the game with a goal in the sixth minute, Betis winger Ayoze Perez hit back in the 32nd minute to level the game at halftime.

The home team hit their stride in the second half, with Antony and Bruno Fernandes scoring less than 15 minutes into the second half before Wout Weghorst sealed the win with a fourth goal in the 82nd minute.

“I think we played well, the second half especially,” Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag said after the game. “4-1. Good goals. Good performance also to give something to the fans, and they gave us something back as well because they were right behind us. It’s always seeing how a team reacts after a setback. We can reset, we can bounce back, this team has character.”

Going forward, Man Utd will look to get their Premier League form back on track when they host strugglers Southampton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
