Sources revealed on Saturday that Manchester United have rejected West Ham United’s £20 million ($25.7 million) bid for defender Harry Maguire. Man United manager Erik ten Hag is believed to be content with keeping Maguire for another season should the club not receive a bid closer to the player’s £40 million valuation.
Maguire has fallen out of favor with Ten Hag since the Dutch coach’s arrival at Old Trafford last season, with Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane emerging as the usual starters at center-back. During the ongoing preseason, Ten Hag decided to strip Maguire of the club captaincy, awarding it to midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
West Ham are reportedly reluctant to offer more money for Maguire than what they have already bid. Even if the Red Devils were to accept West Ham’s offer, another hurdle to getting a deal done would be the player’s steep wages.
Currently, Maguire has two years and a one-year option left on his contract, with his wages set to rise this season because United qualified for the UEFA Champions League.
