Barcelona welcomed back its out-of-form forward Ansu Fati this summer after he had an unsuccessful loan stint with Premier League’s Brighton. The La Liga giants are now considering what to do with Fati next, a problem they wouldn’t have if they only accepted a €100 million offer for him from Manchester United several years ago.
Fati made his Barcelona debut in 2019 as a 16-year-old and later became the club’s youngest goalscorer at the time. He had a great run during the 2019-20 campaign, scoring seven goals and dishing one assist in 24 La Liga matches and providing one goal in the UEFA Champions League.
According to a recent report by The Athletic, Fati’s remarkable form as a youngster captured the attention of Man United, who was interested in bringing him to Old Trafford in the summer of 2020. The English club reportedly offered €100 million ($111.5 million) but Barca ended up rejecting the offer, believing they have their new superstar.
Unfortunately, Fati would go on to suffer a torn meniscus later that year. He ended up returning to the pitch after more than 10 months of absence and wasn’t the same player again. His struggles in the following seasons led to a loan to Brighton, where he also struggled to make a significant impact.
Fati is now back at Barca, but is yet to receive a proper opportunity under new head coach Hansi Flick. He only played two minutes this season, being a late substitute in last week’s UEFA Champions League loss to Monaco.
