Less than a month after being on the brink of losing his job, Manchester United’s head coach Erik ten Hag received a new contract extension.

The Premier League powerhouse confirmed ten Hag’s extension on Thursday, revealing that the Dutch manager is now under contract through 2026. His previous deal was set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season.

Following a largely disappointing season, one that included an FA Cup trophy win but eighth place finish in the Premier League, Manchester United conducted a thorough review of ten Hag’s position. As part of the process, the club’s new sporting department leadership engaged in conversations with multiple high-profile coaches, including Thomas Tuchel. However, with neither option working out, they ended up deciding to stick with ten Hag.

It was initially believed that ten Hag will receive a fresh deal but according to reports, Man United simply triggered a one-year extension on his existing contract.

“I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together,” Ten Hag said in a statement. “Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.”

Erik ten Hag took over Manchester United in 2022 following a successful stint with Eredivisie giants Ajax. In his two years at Old Trafford, ten Hag compiled a 66-17-31 record while winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
