Manchester United are not looking to trigger the one-year extension clause in Raphael Varane’s contract, sources claimed on Monday. This will enable the center-back to negotiate with other clubs during the January transfer window and potentially depart from Old Trafford on a free transfer during the summer.

While Man United manager Erik ten Hag still considers Varane to be an integral part of his team, it is believed that the club would prefer to enter a new contract with the player with more performance-related terms. The club appears unwilling to continue to pay the injury-prone defender £300,000 per week in wages.

Varane has been the center of transfer talks over the past few weeks, with the media linking him to clubs such as Bayern Munich as well as returns to his former teams, Lens and Real Madrid. The 30-year-old remains one of the club’s highest earners alongside Casemiro and Jadon Sancho.
