Major League Soccer is close to having another major soccer star in its ranks. According to a report from The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Manchester City’s midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is considering a move to San Diego FC.
Bogert reports that De Bruyne’s camp had “one conversation” with San Diego FC and that the Belgium international would consider playing for the club if he were to make a move to MLS. However, the deal is far from imminent, and there is no guarantee that the talks between the two sides will be able to move past the exploration point.
San Diego FC will make its MLS debut in 2025. The club currently has three players on its roster: goalie Duran Ferree, midfielder Jeppe Tverskov, and forward Marcus Ingvartsen. They are actively pursuing high-profile names for their Designated Player spots and have been previously linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus.
Kevin De Bruyne, who will turn 33 in June, has one more year left on his contract with City. He was previously linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, where a number of clubs are interested in him, but it is believed that the Premier League champions would like to keep him for at least a few more seasons.
De Bruyne was limited to 25 games in all competitions in 2023-24 due to a number of injuries. Despite this, he still managed to score four goals and 18 assists.
