After previously adding Nathan Ake, Manchester City tried to get another addition to their struggling defense. The Premier League giants offered around $100 million for Atletico Madrid’s center back Jose Gimenez but saw their bid rejected by the Spanish club.

Atletico’s president Enrique Cerezo confirmed these reports in a recent chat with El Transistor, saying that the club isn’t interested in selling one of their best players.

“We did receive the offer,” said Cerezo.”But Gimenez is a magnificent player, and we are interested in having magnificent players on the team.”

Jose Gimenez established himself as one of the best center backs in the game in recent years and is constantly pursued by the top European clubs. Atletico, however, has been reluctant to sell him as they want to continue challenging for the La Liga title and UEFA Champions League trophy.

Gimenez joined Atletico in 2013 from Danubio and has played close to 200 games for the club in all competitions since then.

Man City is now expected to turn their focus elsewhere, having several other defenders on their radar. Out of the bunch, Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly seems to be the team’s preferred choice as they made several inquiries for the Senegalese in the past.
