After an uncharacteristic stretch of seven winless games, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City finally got a victory after defeating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Wednesday.
Entering the game, City has lost four straight in the Premier League, including a crushing loss to title rivals Liverpool over the weekend. However, Pep Guardiola’s team showed signs of life against Forest and hinted at a return to form.
Winger Bernando Silva opened the scoring in the eighth minute before star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, making his first start since September, made it 2-0 before the half. Jeremy Doku made it 3-0 early in the second period, giving City a badly needed feel-good win.
Speaking with reporters after the game, Guardiola said that everyone at City “needed” the win against Forest.
“The most important thing was to break this routine of not winning games and finally we won, but we have to continue, “said Guardiola. “The club, the players, everyone needed to win. After recent events, we weren’t truly relaxed until the final whistle.”
Manchester City received some more great news on Wednesday, considering that Liverpool, who are at the top of the standings, only managed to get a draw against Newcastle United. City now trails Liverpool by nine points and can still remain optimistic about their chances of catching up and winning their fifth straight title.
