Manchester City is believed to have the edge in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, the Daily Star reported on Sunday. Other clubs that have expressed an interest in the 22-year-old rising star include Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United.

The Uruguayan forward has produced a series of fine performances that have turned heads this season, with his latest strong showing coming during Benfica’s 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League—a game in which Nunez scored twice.

In addition to his standout Champion League performances, Nunez has largely impressed in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, netting four goals in five appearances.

While the competition for the 22-year-old’s signature is heating up, Manchester City is convinced that they have an advantage over rival clubs due to their strong relationship with Benfica. The Citizens have already alerted the Portuguese outfit as to their interest in the player.

Over the past four years, Man City has secured the signings of two major Benfica players, namely goalkeeper Ederson and center-back Ruben Dias.

While Benfica has set a £125 million release clause for the player, Man City hopes to sign Nunez for a price tag of £70 million.
