Manchester City has completed the signing of 26-year-old central midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United, the club announced on Monday. The reigning Premier League champions are due to pay an initial transfer fee of £42 million followed by an additional £3 million in add-ons.
“I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City. City have again proved to the best team in the country with an amazing squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world,” Phillips stated following the news of his arrival at the Etihad.
The young English midfielder will have to compete with the experienced holding midfielder Rodri for a spot in the starting 11. Phillips is nonetheless a welcome addition to the club, filling the void left by Fernandinho who left the Etihad at the end of last season following a nine-year tenure with the club.
Phillips is the latest arrival in what has been a busy summer for City, having already signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund on a five-year deal worth £51 million. The club’s next target appears to be Brighton fullback Marc Cucurella.
