Manchester City is reportedly looking to add some veteran presence to their defense. According to The Telegraph, City is interested in Tottenham’s center-back Jan Vertonghen and will make a move for the player this summer.

City’s manager Pep Guardiola sees Vertonghen as an ideal player to stabilize his inconsistent back four and appreciates his versatility. The fact that the 33-year-old player will also be available on a free transfer makes him an even more desirable target.

Vertonghen’s contract with Tottenham is set to expire at the end of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign, and the Belgian already told the club that he isn’t interested in renewing it. He was linked with Roma, Inter Milan, and Sevilla in recent months, but neither club managed to get the job done so far as the player reportedly wants to stay in England.

Jan Vertonghen would definitely fit nicely with Manchester City as the club struggled to get consistent performances from their defense. In recent years, City spent large amounts of money on defenders, but big-time signings like John Stones and Aymeric Laporte still haven’t panned out. Vertonghen, on the other hand, is a consistent performer and has been playing on a high level for a number of years in the Premier League.

Vertonghen spent his early career with Dutch giants Ajax, before joining Tottenham in 2012. Since then, he made more than 300 appearances for the club in all competitions.
