The Sacramento Kings have reportedly agreed a four-year contract with pending free agent Malik Monk.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Monk’s deal is worth $78 million, the maximum amount that the Kings could offer him. The agreement includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, allowing Monk to get an even bigger deal down the line if he continues to perform well.
Monk had his best season as a pro in 2023-24, averaging a career-high 15.4 points and 5.1 assists while adding 2.9 rebounds. He also finished second in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year voting. His campaign came to an unfortunate end, as an MCL sprain ruled him out for the final nine games of the regular season and Play-In tournament.
Monk was expected to become a highly sought-after player in this year’s free agency and could have probably landed an even bigger deal than the one offered to him by the Kings. However, the former Kentucky product prioritized comfort and continuity in Sacramento, where he is now poised for an even bigger role.
Malik Monk was drafted in the league by the Charlotte Hornets with the 11th overall pick in 2017. After four years with the Hornets, which featured flashes of talent but also great inconsistency, Monk landed with the Los Angeles Lakers on a one-year deal.
During the stint with the Lakers, Monk established himself as a key role player and prompted the Kings to lure him with a two-year, $19 million deal. The move turned out to be a great decision for both sides, with Sacramento getting an ever-improving player and Monk receiving an opportunity to show his basketball capabilities.
