Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon is pursuing Colorado Rapids’ center back Moïse Bombito, according to multiple reports.
The Athletic’s Tom Bogert reports that Lyon recently presented an offer of $4 million to the MLS side for Bombito but was rejected. The French club is expected to return with an improved bid in the upcoming days.
There are several other teams reportedly monitoring Bombito, who is currently on international duty with the Canadian national team at 2024 Copa América. However, Lyon already agreed to personal terms with the player and are confident about getting the deal over the finishing line.
A potential sale of Bombito is almost guaranteed to set a new record for outgoing transfer for the Rapids. Their current record is the $2 million they received for left-back Sam Vines when he joined Royal Antwerp in 2021.
Moïse Bombito spent his early career playing semi-professionally in his native Canada and USL League Two. He was selected third overall by the Rapids in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, and his career skyrocketed since.
After an encouraging second part of the 2023 campaign, Bombito established himself as a regular starter for the Rapids this season. He played in 16 games and scored two goals while being considered among the best center-backs in the league.
Bombito’s great performances in MLS also brought him a call-up to Canada’s national team, and he has made seven international appearances so far.
