When the LA Clippers acquired shooting guard Luke Kennard from the Detroit Pistons earlier this offseason, many viewed it as a move to provide a short-term boost to the team’s rotation. But as it turns out, the team has every intention to make Kennard an important piece of their future.

The Clippers announced on Tuesday that they’d signed Kennard to a four-year rookie extension that will keep the 24-year-old shooter with the franchise through the 2024-25 NBA season.

According to the player’s agent, Kennard will earn $64 million from his new deal.

“Today is a great day,” said Kennard after inking the deal. “I couldn’t be more excited to play for the LA Clippers, and am thankful for Steve Ballmer, my teammates, and the entire Clippers organization for giving me the opportunity to be part of this world-class franchise.”

Luke Kennard, who was drafted 12th overall in 2017, is coming off a knee injury that limited him to just 28 games in 2019-20. He was on course to put up a career-season, averaging 15.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists while making an impressive 39.9 percent of his three-pointers.

Kennard made his debut for the Clippers on Tuesday night, contributing to his team’s 116-109 win over the reigning NBA champs LA Lakers. He spent 21 minutes on the floor, scoring four points and adding two rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
